MUSHROOM ROOM

24 Dec 2019 – 30 Aug 2020
Private window space in Grey Lynn

My creations of scaled-up mushrooms and fungi imbued the space with a sense of whimsicalness and a fairytale-like quality, yet they also carried a sinister and poisonous allure. Through my 2017 installation piece 'Lost in the Forest,' which I had extracted from a dream scene, I wove a narrative about the life of a wanderer, conveying my own artistic agony and my sense of alienation from society's conventional notions of success.

This installation invited the audience to perambulate around, observing unfamiliar objects and indulging in moments of solitude. These actions served as brief respites or escape from the demands of contemporary life, akin to a form of short-term meditation. It provided viewers with the opportunity to pause and rediscover themselves in their own personal forests, offering a third-person perspective on their lives in contrast to the rushed and fast-paced nature of modern living.
